Facebook Creative Labs will soon release PAPER, a new App that lets you “Explore and share stories from friends and the world around you.” According to Facebook, Paper combines news articles, videos and photos your friends share on Facebook with human-curated content from traditional news outlets like The New York Times,  TIME Magazine or The Huffington Post. With less then a month left in 2013, we wanted to look back on the biggest trends over the past year and see how it compared with Mashable‘s list published a year ago. In 2013 we saw a rise in Big Data, in 3D printing, the death of the Desktop computer, and Crowd funding but it looks like they were not “yet” right about Flexible Devices… Earlier this month, Juniper Research has released its top 10 tech trends for 2014. It looks like our cities are going to get smarter, our money is going digital, we’ll wear more “smart devices”, and we will be printing a lot more products from home. Juniper’s top 10 technology trends for 2014 1) Cities will get smarter Cities will get increasingly smart as sensors and cloud-enabled apps connect transportation, metering, health care, lighting, and environment data, and make it actionable. 2) Mobile money will continue to grow Mobile money is enabling banking and financing systems in the developing world via mobile wallets, which should continue to grow both there and in developing countries. And as mobile grows in Africa and Asia, so will the provision of data, including data on better crop management, yield, and product tracking. 3) Wearable devices will proliferate Google has Glass, and Samsung has a smartwatch, but Apple’s iWatch and many other smart wearable technologies are coming out soon. Recently Facebook announced that it is implementing #hashtags to manage topics on the growing social network . #hashtags are not a new “trend” on the web, they appeared long ago on IRC to help manage chat groups. In 2007, Chris Messina suggesting that they  used #hashtags on twitter to help trend topics. Now they are more commonly seen and used by twitter, facebook, instagrams and other social networks. What is a #Hashtag? A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol. It is a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging social networking services such as Twitter, Tout, identi.ca, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Google+ or Facebook may be tagged by putting “#” before important words, as in: #Wikipedia is an #encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Hashtags provide a means of grouping such messages, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it. Using #Hashtags on Facebook. Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase (written as one word) and add it to your post. For example: I walked up so many hills today! #SanFrancisco When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You’ll also see some related hashtags at the top. A sitemap provides text links of each page of a website to both humans and search engines.  They can be very helpful for search engines to understand what your site is about, especially if your main navigation is embedded in images, uses javascript, or Flash.  They are also very helpful for visitors to your site to help them quickly find the information  they are seeking. There are two different types of site maps: xml and html sitemaps. What is XML and HTML? Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. In 2005, Google introduced the xml sitemap. HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the main markup language for creating web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser.   How do you create a xml sitemap? If your site is built on a WordPress platform, there are several plugins you can use that will create sitemaps for you.  If you need to create the sitemap yourself, checkout xml-sitemaps.com, a free sitemap generator tool.
